Studio Underd0g's 02Series is a fascinating evolution of the brand's initial foray into the world of field watches. Introduced in 2023, the 02Series took a unique approach by combining the classic field watch design with the brand's signature playful aesthetic, inspired by a theoretical 1945 Ministry of Defence brief and the Dirty Dozen watches. Three years later, the brand returns with a slimmer, more powerful version, the 02Series Gen2.
One of the most notable changes is the reduction in thickness. The original 02s boasted a 12mm case thickness, but the Gen2 has been slimmed down to just 11.5mm, with the crystal contributing to the overall reduction in size. This was achieved through a meticulous redesign of the dial and hand construction, allowing the crystal to sit closer to the display. The brand's in-house workshop, The D0ghouse, played a crucial role in achieving tighter assembly tolerances, further enhancing the watch's sleek profile.
The dial has also undergone a transformation. The minutes track has been slightly inwardly adjusted to improve legibility, and the handset has been completely retooled. The amount of printed text has been reduced and rebalanced, ensuring a clean and modern look. The dial now features four new colors: Nightshade, a deep purple tone, and Red L0lly, a cherry red. These colors are achieved through a unique process of tinting the 1mm-thick sapphire layer, which is suspended above the metallic dial base. A sunburst pattern is etched into the layer below, creating a mesmerizing play of light and color.
The movement has also been upgraded. The Sellita SW200-2 M Power+ has replaced the previous Sellita SW210-1, offering a 63-hour power reserve compared to the previous 42 hours. This increase in power reserve is a significant improvement, ensuring the watch can keep time accurately for extended periods. The movement also retains hacking seconds, allowing for precise time setting.
The 02Series Gen2 is available in two new dial colors: Nightshade and Red L0lly, joining the returning Pink Lem0nade and Steffany Blue models. The Full Mo0n and Midnight editions have been discontinued, making way for these new, vibrant colors. The watch is priced at GBP 875, EUR 900, or USD 1,200, and is available immediately from the brand and by appointment at The D0ghouse.
